A few things happened to me along the way that I forgot to mention or don't remember exactly when they happened, so I've consolidated them here.
- Buying my jacket at the "Very Sale" in a Chiang Mai shopping mall
- A taxi driver in Bangkok who seemed to fall asleep and snore at every red light. It worried me at first, but he always woke up the second the light turned green!
- The "foil blankets" men were selling to the millions of tourists picnicking for the King's birthday. These are actually sample shampoo packets, ketchup packets, soup packets, etc. that haven't been cut out yet. One family was sitting on a large "blanket" that said Pantene Pantene Pantene Pantene across it. Were these stolen from factories? They would be effective at keeping you from getting a wet butt, though - always a big plus.
- The new pizza offering at a Thai pizza chain - pizza with hot dogs in the crust. Mini hot dogs are laid around the edge of the pizza and the crust is rolled over it. It's advertised as "the best of America meets the best of Italy!". Wow.
- Women at the markets shouting "Madame, madame, we have big size for you!" It does give you a complex. Another shop referred to it as "European size" which was a little less offensive. And since when am I a "madame"?
- Helping a woman at the security checkpoint at the Bangkok airport convince the guard that the plant she was carrying was not real and therefore no agricultural threat to Cambodia. We had to argue with her for ages until she finally consented with a "Wow. It looks real!" comment. I have to admit it was a very good silk plant. But then again, Thailand is known for its silk, right?
