As for the Chiang Mai tour itself, day 1 added to my animal count, which seems to be the theme for this trip. Our first stop was at a snake farm, where a snake charmer did such tricks as kissing a cobra and wrestling a python underwater. It was a bit cheesy, but still quite fascinating. Then back in the Jeep and on to the elephant farm. More animals! That was a real highlight as we got to feed elephants (their snouts feel so bizarre), ride an ox cart (NOT comfortable), ride an elephant (motion sickness inducing) and watch the elephants paint, play soccer, play basketball and dance!
After lunch at the elephant farm (better than it sounds) we drove to a hilltop where a new temple was being built to house some of Buddha's hair being brought from India. The outside was mostly completed but they were still working on the inside. Didn't make much sense to me that they had already installed the large porcelain vases before they finished the interior, and were still jackhammering and using sledgehammers. The real highlight to stopping here was that we could see Burma and Laos from the hilltop.
The rest of the day was spent 4 wheeling through rough jungle terrain to our hotel, in the middle of said jungle. Then it was off to bed, after managing to figure out what time I was supposed to be up!
